“Stop Fighting With Your Appetite and Start Living Your Life”

San Diego, CA—February 27, 2007- What if someone told you there were no such things as good or bad feelings? What if you could understand why inner turmoil causes you to obsess on weight, food or appearance? Learning to manage your emotions and appetite is made possible by Karen Koenig, author of the Food and Feelings Workbook: A Full Course Meal on Emotional Health. In this workbook, Koenig reveals that successfully overcoming eating problems depends on learning to effectively and appropriately handle emotions, instead of burying them in food-related behaviors.

Through her research, Koenig has defined the seven feelings that are most difficult for dysfunctional eaters: guilt, shame, helplessness, anxiety, disappointment, confusion, and loneliness. “Emotions can be so overwhelming that we often avoid them by obsessing about food and weight.” This could be eating a carton of ice cream to mend a broken heart, or skipping meals while studying for an important exam. Through thoughtful, focused exercises, Koenig helps the reader understand and accept the true purpose of their emotions. She emphasizes that the best thing to do with feelings is to experience and learn from each one, from amazement to anxiety.

The link between eating and emotions can cause many problems, from eating disorders to low self esteem, to fearing your own appetite. However, once we learn to trust that our feelings are here to guide us, food becomes a source of nourishment, and we gain confidence in our emotions. The solution for healing comes from the heart–specifically, learning to experience and tolerate a full range of emotions, rather than starving or stuffing them away.
