Bio
Arnold Andersen, M.D. is Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa, College of Medicine, where he and Dr. Bowers and Kay Evans, ARNP, have initiated a spectrum of care for eating disorders, including an inpatient unit, a Partial Hospital (Day) Program, an Outpatient Diagnostic and Continuing Care Clinic, and a variety of teaching and research programs. Their program is based on cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) principles, including group, family, and individual therapy, with individualized psychopharmacology.

Dr. Andersen is especially interested in the integration of biomedical and psychosocial therapies, the gender factor in behavioral disorders, the neurobiology of eating disorders, medical complications of eating disorders, and cross-cultural studies. He and colleagues have published numerous peer-reviewed research studies, clinical teaching chapters in books, and presented outcome and other research studies at local, national, and international meetings. His background includes Cornell Medical College, a medical internship, board certification in psychiatry, 15 years on the faculty of Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, and participation in numerous scientific groups.

His vision of future research in eating disorders is that it will lead to more effective treatment through understanding of the mechanisms of illness, and especially identification of vulnerable young people in whom evidence-based preventions may be effective. His research at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and the University of Iowa includes studies on the effect of eating disorders on bone density (osteoporosis), males with eating disorders, treatment outcome, and theories of origin of eating disorders. He enjoys skiing, travel, writing, and hiking.
