Research on Genes and Eating Disorders: For the past few years, the National Institute of Mental Health has been sponsoring a multicenter, international study seeking to determine whether a gene or genes might predispose individuals to develop anorexia nervosa. They are almost finished but still need families with at least two members who have or had anorexia nervosa, and who would be willing to participate. The study involves the completion of interviews, questionnaires, and a blood draw. Participants do not need to travel and will be paid upon completion of the study. “You have probably heard the story of Scrooge in Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol. When I was a child, I dreaded the occasions when my family watched the movie on television. It was twenty years later that I could begin to appreciate the full meaning of this story…Scrooge was just buzzing along in his life totally focused on what was important to him. His work was going well. He was making money, but he was a penny pincher. He had no empathy for people who were less fortunate. He had no heartwarming traits at all. Scrooge was not in the mood for company on Christmas Eve, but he had visitors anyway—the ghost of his deceased friend Marley, and three Spirits he had never met before… The night was long for Scrooge; sparing nothing, they forced him to relive his Past, to scrutinize the Present, and to face the Future—the unknown… This was the spirits’ message to Scrooge:
“Scrooge, you’ve managed to get off track. You’ve lost sight of the wonder of the world, of humanity, of yourself! That’s not a good idea, especially because you were put on this planet for a purpose.
“You’ve become totally entrenched in a spiritless existence. That’s not a way to live, but you don’t seem to be able to figure that out for yourself. So we’ve come to help you out—to help you to see.
“We don’t mean to give you a hard time, but if we don’t, you’ll miss the point of our visit. You were meant to lead an inspired life! Be sure that you learn this life-lesson now, before it’s too late. If you do, you can become the person you were meant to be, and the pain of this nightmare will go away”
There are parallels in your life, although you may not see them. Just substitute Scrooge’s obsessions with money and work with your obsessions with food, weight, and physical perfection. On the deepest level, you are not meant to—nor do you even want to—live a life based on those kinds of external priorities. But you have not known how to connect with a life that is more meaningful.
You don’t have Scrooge’s spirits to awaken you, but other events can serve the same purpose. Chaotic eating is a powerful teacher in its own right. It is no more mild-mannered or welcome, and no less terrifying. As distressing as it is, don’t lose sight of why it is there.”
