Eating Disorders: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention
Peer Review Protocol

PURPOSE

To define the peer-review process used for the Eating Disorders: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention, to assure consistency over time and adherence to industry and ethical standards.

Aims & Scope. There is a need for a comprehensive source detailing the multidisciplinary approaches to the treatment and prevention of eating disorders. This journal has placed itself in the epicenter of this innovative work since its inception in 1993.

Eating Disorders is contemporary and wide ranging, and takes a practical and humanistic view of clients and their presenting problems. Readers find a multidisciplinary perspective reflecting the many faceted biopsychosocial aspects of eating/weight-related problems. The journal specifically focuses on contributions that facilitate and inspire prevention and treatment approaches.

A distinguished international editorial board ensures that Eating Disorders will continuously reflect the evolving spectrum of approaches to prevention and treatment. Covering all varieties of eating disorders and related problems, the journal explores these issues from both an evidence- and experience-based angle with emphasis on new or thought-provoking viewpoints.

Regular Features of the journal include:

Adherence to Ethical Guidelines.  The journal’speer-review process follows the journal program guidelines of the American Psychological Association, Publication Manual, 5th Edition, Section 8.05. As this manual is updated, Eating Disorders will adjust its processes to accommodate alterations made to this manual.

Editorial Conventions. Eating Disorders peer-review process follows the editorial conventions of the American Psychological Association, Publication Manual, 5th Edition.

Selection of Editors.  The Editor-in-Chief and/or Senior Editors of Eating Disorders select members of the Editorial Board with known academic credentials and experience in the research, assessment, prevention or treatment of eating disorders. In most cases, Editorial Board members possess doctoral level degrees (MD, DO, PhD, PsyD), but to represent the range of disciplines commonly required to assess and treat eating disorders, members of the Editorial Board may also possess an RD, Master’s degree in an appropriate field, or RN. Special Editors may also be appointed by the Editor-in-Chief and/or Senior Editors of Eating Disorders. Special Editors possess similar experience and credentials to members of the Editorial Board but have a specialized area of expertise or interest that assists Eating Disorders to fulfill its mission.  Current membership of the Editorial Board is printed in each issue of Eating Disorders and is available online. Individuals interested in being nominated for the Editorial Board should send a letter or introduction and CV to the Editor-in-Chief.

Instructions for Authors.  Instructions for Authors are printed in each issue of Eating Disorders and are available online. Article submissions should be made via e-mail to Leigh Cohn, Editor-in-Chief (leigh@gurze.net). The Editor-in-Chief will accept PDF or MS-Word files as e-mail attachments. Complete contact information must be included in the cover letter, which should be in the form of an e-mail. The subject line should state: "ED Journal Submission", and a confirmation will be sent back. If no response is received within 10 days, the author should write another e-mail for verification of receipt.

Article Selection. Articles for Eating Disorders are generally unsolicited. For special topical issues or needs established by the Editor-in-Chief and/or Senior Editors, manuscripts may be solicited from authors with expertise appropriate to the special topic or need. As such, anonymous and/or masked peer-review is not possible.

Each submitted manuscript is reviewed by at least two members of the Editorial Board (see manuscript evaluation). The Editor-in-Chief and/or Senior Editors may reject an article outright, without its review by members of the Editorial Board, if its content is clearly outside the scope of the journal’s topical domain, if it offers clearly unsubstantiated, slanderous commentary or invective against another professional, if it lacks basic grammar or usage conventions of the English language, or if it clearly violates accepted scientific standards.

Regular Features are evaluated directly by the Special Editors of those features outside of the standard review process. Otherwise, reviewers classify each submitted article into one of four categories.  These categories, including the percentage of articles that were classified into each during the years 2002-2008, are as follows:

*325 does not include Regular Features or articles which are currently pending.
